The Municipal Act, a piece of provincial legislation, gives municipal councils tremendous authority over many issues within their jurisdiction. One of the powers granted to municipalities is the authority to create by-laws. By-laws are real ‘laws’ that can be enforced by a municipal enforcement officer, the police or by the courts.
Almost everything the Council or the staff do is approved by way of administrative by-laws such as approval of the budget, the purchase or sale of land, etc. The Council also passes general by-laws governing all residents, businesses and property owners in the town.
We have gathered here a number of the most relevant and up-to-date by-laws in digital form for your reference. If you don’t see a specific by-law here on this list, it does not necessarily mean there is no by-law governing that topic. If you have questions on any by-laws for any specific issues, please do not hesitate to contact the By-Law Officer or Town Clerk for more information or copies of older by-laws.
